| General Biographical Description: | Sarah L. Berga is the James Robert McCord Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia. Before coming to Emory, Dr Berga was Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences and Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1988 to 2003 and a senior investigator at Magee-Womens Research Institute. Dr Berga is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She lectures widely on topics related to menopause, infertility, hormones, and women’s health. She is author or co-author of over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 60 book chapters and review articles, and a variety of other works. Dr Berga’s research contributions have focused primarily on understanding endocrine and neuroendocrine mechanisms mediating the link between psychogenic and metabolic stresses and functional forms anovulation such as hypothalamic amenorrhea and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In addition, Dr Berga was an investigator for the Women’s Health Initiative, the NIH-funded, multicenter trial to document the impact of good nutrition and hormone replacement therapy upon the health of menopausal women. She is particularly interested in the menopause transition and the role of menopausal hormone therapy in cognition and mood. Dr Berga is active in numerous professional organizations, serves on NIH study section, and holds offices or serves on programmatic committees for such bodies as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Federation of International Obstetrics and Gynecology Organizations, the International Society for Gynecologic Endocrinology, the Society for Humanism in Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation. |
