When reproductive age women are diagnosed with HTN, they should be counseled about their reproductive future – pregnancy, how it is affected by their condition, and the risks their medications pose to potential pregnancies.
Hypertension:
Increases risk of superimposed preeclampsia
Increases risk of perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity
Can make the diagnosis of preeclampsia difficult
Hypertension is associated with several adverse outcomes:
premature birth
intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
fetal demise
placental abruption
cesarean delivery
small for gestational age infants
significantly increased perinatal mortality
